Student Fellowship Awards

Each year, AWRA-WA offers graduate student fellowships, presented to students enrolled in  a Washington State advanced degree program studying topics related to water resources science, policy, or management. One award, the Rod Sakrison memorial, goes to a member of a Washington Section sponsored student chapter of AWRA. The other awards go to any student in a water resources program.

The AWRA-WA Fellowship Committee evaluates all applications based on the interdisciplinary nature of the course of study and research, the effectiveness of the response communicating research objectives, the potential for applying the work to the current needs in water resource  management, and the reviewers’ overall impression of the applicant’s qualifications and presentation. In 2024-2025, the Board awarded three student fellowships in the amount of $2,500 each.

Congratulations to our three AWRA-WA Student Fellowship Award recipients! Kaylyn Stewart of UW, Abdisa Kebebew of WSU, and Maggie Egan of CWU are conducting innovative research in water resources and demonstrated outstanding academic excellence in a competitive pool of fellowship applications this year.

  • Kaylyn Stewart – PhD candidate at the University of Washington (UW); Synthesis and Characterization of Molecular Imprinted Polymers on Activated Carbon for Selective Removal of PFAS
  • Abdisa Kebebew – PhD candidate at Washington State University (WSU); Modeling the Impact of Wildfire on Municipal Watersheds: Implications for Reservoir Management
  • Maggie Egan – Graduate student at Central Washington University (CWU); The Hydrology and Geomorphology of Pre-Restoration West Fork Teanaway

In addition to the cash award of $2,500, each fellowship recipient received full memberships to the National AWRA and Washington State Section, a one-year subscription to the Journal of the American Water Resources Association (JAWRA), and complimentary admission to the Washington State Section Annual Conference.

The application period for the 2025-2026 student fellowships will open in early 2026. Further questions about the fellowship can be answered by Jason McCormick at jason@mccormickwater.com.
