Updated Climate Impacts in Washington and an Exploration of Nature-Based Solutions as a Strategy to Buffer Future Drought

Susan Dickerson-Lange, PhD, LHG

Director, UW Climate Impacts Group

Susan will share the state of the science for observed and projected climate impacts in Washington State, which was recently published by Ecology with support from UW CIG, as required by RCW 70A.45.040. As a hydrologist, Susan’s focuses on changes in frequency and magnitude of droughts and floods and the consequences of hydrologic impacts for wildfire, forest health, aquatic habitat, and water availability. Susan will provide an overview of nature-based solutions, which aim to increase the storage of water on the landscape by slowing its conveyance downstream or back to the atmosphere. A key aim of these approaches is to accommodate and restore natural processes so that the solutions create social and ecological co-benefits, while also reducing the vulnerability of both people and nature to climate impacts. This talk will explore current work to quantify the potential effectiveness and co-benefits of nature-based solutions such as upland forest thinning to increase snow storage.

    Meet the Presenter:

Susan is the Director of the University of Washington Climate Impacts Group and an Affiliate Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Susan’s professional background includes applied research and environmental consulting, and she is passionate about watershed science and co-creating climate adaptation strategies with stakeholders. Susan earned a PhD in Hydrology from UW, holds degrees in Geology from the College of William and Mary and Western Washington University, and is a Washington State Licensed Hydrogeologist.

    Board Election:

Results of this year's AWRA-WA Board Election will be announced prior to Susan's presentation. AWRA-WA members in good financial standing will soon receive an email from ElectionBuddy to vote for next year's Board of Directors.
